Beckford Bowl V Salisbury & South Wilts
A new season is upon us and the scratch team opened up their season in the preliminary round of this year’s Beckford Bowl, home to Salisbury & South Wilts.
They brought down a very strong team, including a +4 handicapper, but coming to Came Down is a tough challenge for any team.
The morning foursomes were lead by Captain Mark Stickley and Welsh Wizard, Geraint Hughes. They did not disappoint and led the line perfectly, hammering their number one pairing 6&5 for the perfect start.
Gareth Hughes and Ryan Ford were up next and played some excellent golf, including two 2s on the back 9 but saved the best until last. All square heading up 18, Ryan crushed a drive up the middle with Gareth hitting a 5 iron just short of the green. An incredible chip and putt was enough to clinch the match and another point for Came Down.
Mike Spearing and The Milkman, Stephen Blake, were off third and although played nicely, came up against a great Salisbury pairing and were defeated 1down.
Chris Skinner and scratch team debutant Ben Tyrrell gave a great account of themselves but a great short game display from Salisbury’s final pairing gave them a 3&2 win
The game nicely poised at 2-2 at lunch and the wind began to pick up for the afternoon singles, Came felt that home advantage need to be converted.
Captain Mark teed up first and had a cracking match but unfortunately lost on the 18th. Geraint went second after a fantastic morning of ball striking and putting and didn’t disappoint and grinded out a great 1up victory. Hughes Junior teed off third and although losing the first hole, managed to win 8 of the next 11 to cruise to a 7&6 victory, scoring -4 in the process. Ryan was off fourth and was up against their +4 handicapper. Four bogies in the first five holes cost him dearly but played holes 6-16 in -3 but still lost 3&2.
With the match still tied at 4-4, the tail end needed to contribute. Mike Spearing rolled back the years with a fantastic putting display and birding several difficult holes into the wind including the 6th and the 9th and a well timed birdie on the 17th securing a 2&1 win. Stephen Blake was frustrating his opponent with a wonderful short game display and convincingly won 4&3. With just a half required, Chris Skinner started fast and played excellent around the turn to consolidate his early advantage to secure a 3&2 win. Ben played great on the back nine to win a few holes back after a slow start but unfortunately lost his match on the 17th.
Came Down secured a 7-5 victory and await the winners of either Ferndown or High Post in the First round. A special thanks to Charlie McIntyre for starting the pairs this morning and Charles Foster for supporting the team throughout the day.
