Match report of Came Down Hardy B v Ferndown on Sunday 9th June 2019

Hopes were high that we would put up a fine performance in our first Home league game of the season and produce a win against a Ferndown side that just managed to beat us in a cup game at their course earlier in the year.

Sunday afternoons weather was dry and sunny, with very little wind, a shame that the wind was not stronger as this would definitely help the home side, who rarely play Came in such calm conditions as today.

First out for Came was Mark Bonnett and Jamie Newsam. A very tight game, and despite good play by the Came pair, they found themselves 2 down with 3 to play, and were never in front over the first 15 holes.  They then won 16, to pull it but to one down, and had some fire in their belly now. Great play and they win 17 to get the game back all square going down 18. A tied hole at 18 left this game all square. A well-deserved half, that never looked on the cards with 3 to play.

Second pair out for Came was Big Dan Turner and Paul Walker, two of our young guns teamed up together for the first time. These two made very light work of their opponents, winning the 1st & 2nd holes and stamping their mark on the game early. There only blip was a lost hole on the 5th. From then on, they were never in trouble on the way to a great 4&3 win and an early drink back in the bar. The only downside is Big Dan is on holiday for our next game.

Middle pair out was Ross Sandercock and Zak Killian for his first Hardy B game of the season. They also had the added task of playing against Ferndown’s experienced captain. These young players  done well, never more than one up at any time during the game, and facing the fact that on 6 occasions Ferndown pulled the game back to all square, they stuck at the task, A great 3 by Zak on 17th put them one up again, an advantage they held up to thru 18 to get Came’s second full point with a one up win! Came were now assured of at least a draw with 2.5 points in the bag.

Fourth pair off for Came were Marcus Simpson and Roger Chadwick, their 3rd game together this season, and hot off a win in their last match. This was to be a very different game to there last one, soon 4 down after 6, mainly thanks to a string of pars from the Ferndown pair. They got in back to 3 down at the turn. Then back to 4 down, with 4 to play, they found some form. 3 down with 3 to play, 2 down with 2 to play. 1 down with 1 to play. Could they scrape a half by winning the 18th? Ferndown just managed to hang on with a tied hole on 18 to win 1up. But a great fight back by Marcus and Roger, who should be out again together in next game.

Last off, Captain Stewart Green teamed up with his playing partner from last year, James Baker. These 2 have always played well together and have yet to be beaten. 1 up after 3, thanks to a fine par, things where looking good. Ferndown then kicked into action, winning the 5th, followed by a clip in on the 6th, and a win on 7. The Came pair were 2 down at the turn. A good up and down out of the bunker by Stewart held the 10th to a tie, again 11 was tied. But a very good 3 by Ferndown on 12 put the Came pair 3 down. Missed putts by Stewart & James on 13, 14 and 15 left them still at 3 down with 3 to play. Finally, a putt drops and James wins 16 with a par. Now 2 down with 2 to play. Came would need a birdie to win 17 and keep this game alive, but same story as earlier, both missed birdie putts and Ferndown held on to win 2 &1.

Result 2.5 each, and a draw.
