Hardy B match report Sturminster Marshall v Came Down 27th July 2019

With the Hardy B team back on the road to an away fixture, they needed to get an away win after a loss at Meyrick Park 2 weeks earlier. A very pleasant sunny day was just what was required at a lovely tight 9 hole course, on which 18 holes would be played with the second 9 off different tees.

Mark Bonnett and Dave Whittingham would be first out for Came, against the Moore Brothers.  Nice tight game, level at the turn. Mark and Dave got the game to the 18th hole, where they slipped to a 1up defeat on this short course where Pars are often only good enough to half holes, and birdies are much needed. First blood to the home team.

Second out for Came was Dave Shaw and the inform Zak Killian who had to give shots to the others in this game. 2 up at the turn, these 2 were never behind and pushed on to a 4 & 2 win, there gross score was under par for the course.  This must surely make their team places secure for the next game. Match score now 1-1.

Steve Watts (Snip) and the returning Dave Allen had the honours of playing pair 3 for Came in this match. Came much needed a win from these 2 as the match was so tight. They got off to a great start, 1 up after 7. Snip then had a nice run of pars, with Dave chucking in a birdie or 2. Game over on 15 with a 4 & 3 win. Came were now 2-1 up in the match and just needed a win from one of the final 2 pairs.

4th pair out for Came was Roger Chadwick & Ross Sandercock, who had to play the Sturminster Captain and a very handy 12 year old young lady by the name off Honor Johnson playing off her 11 handicap. 2 down at the turn the Came pair had a fight back, Ross birdied 10, and a net birdie on 13 the game was back to all square. Still all square on 17th tee, they then lost 17  by not securing a par on this hole. Needing to win 18 for a half in this game, nerves must have got the better of all the players in this group as nobody managed to get the Par. Came lost to the Sturminster pair. This could well go down in history as the first ever win with a lady playing. Match score now 2-2!!

Last out Came Captain Stewart Green with Big Dan Turner. Stewart’s brief to Dan was ‘leave the Driver in the bag’ you will not need it round here. Not the best of starts as the Came pair go 1 down on the first. Big Dan then gets a birdie on the 3rd, only for the Sturminster pair to strike back on the 4th to go back to one up. Stewart then wins 5, all square again. Hole 6 is halved with 2’s from Stewart and Jay. From hole 7 onward the Came Pair get on top of this game, partly due to some very steady play, and a bit of a wobble from the Sturminster pair. Pars with the odd birdie see them home to an easy 4 and 3 win.

Final match score: a great 3-2 wins for Came.

Came have now played 5 matches, 2 wins, 2 draws and just the one defeat. Last league game at home to Highcliffe on August 10th where a home win is a must!!
