Came Down v Sherborne Golf Club

A breezy, drizzly morning welcomed the visitors to Came Down giving the home team a positive feeling about the upcoming foursomes.

Matt Walker partnered new young Professional Sean Dimmick. They had a great tussle with Sherborne’s +1 handicapper and Senior European Tour regular and came out the victors by winning the 18th hole to win 1up.

Welsh Wizard, Geraint Hughes, partnered by Chris “two-point” Skinner, going off second, and gave the Sherborne youngsters a golfing lesson in the wind, dismantling them for a 4&3 win.

The third pairing of cricket-mad Hugh Lawes and Martin Aylett gelled really well and by their own admittance played fantastic golf, but unfortunately came up against a +1 and 2 handicap pairing who showed their class and lost on the 17th.

Stand in Captain Ryan Ford partnered the big hitting Gareth Hughes. 9 birdies were shared between the two pairings but Ryan and Gareth continued their unbeaten home foursomes record with a comfortable 2&1 win.

With Came Down 3-1 up after the morning session, they needed just 3 points to secure victory and knock out the three time, back to back winners from 2015-2017. A drawn match is decided on the foursome result.

With this in mind, Captain Ford, along with his Vice captains of Walker and Hughes Jnr, discussed long and hard about the order that would ensure Came’s victory into the Semi Final.  After much consideration, Hugh Lawes and Martin Aylett led the troops out and both put in excellent displays but both coming up just short.

Sean went third and showed his class of ball striking and putting to wrap up his match 3&2. Club Champion Matt Walker also dismantled his opponent in the afternoon breeze, putting in 5 birdies in 15 holes to win 4&3. Chris Skinner put in a great performance but came up short in his match.

With the tie nicely poised, it was down to the final three matches to bring in the final point required and Gareth Hughes didn’t disappoint. Patients was key in his match as he was 2 down after 7 but was -1 at that point, however Gareth won 6 of the next 8 holes to secure a 4&3 win and the match for Came. Captain Ford then compiled Sherborne’s misery with a tough, hard fought 1up victory. Geraint came up short against Sherborne’s +1 handicapper but Came Down had won the match 7-5.

A great day from all who played and some fantastic golf played by all. Came Down now await their opponents in the semi-final and keeping their fingers crossed for another home draw.
