Stoke Salver v Ashley Wood Match Report

Came Down hosted Ashley Wood in the Semi-Final of the Stoke Salver competition. Blustery conditions greeted the visitors meaning home advantage was key to Came in order to advance to the final.

The morning foursomes kicked off with Matt Walker and Sean Dimmick leading the line. After winning three of the first four holes they were always going to be hard to catch and ran out 2&1 winners against their Head Professional, who subsequently had a hole-in-one on the 6th!

Geraint Hughes and Mike Spearing struggled to gel together and came up short with a 2&1 defeat.

The Mitchell Brothers, aka, Mark and Alan Stickley played the perfect game on returning to the scratch side in overcoming their opponents comfortably winning 3&2.

Ryan Ford and Gareth Hughes once again showed their match play grit by grinding out a very hard fought 1up victory.

As in the previous round, Came Down had a 3-1 lead and needed to win just 3 out of the 8 singles matches to advance to the final. With this in mind, Captain Mark, Vice Captain Ryan and Manager Nick all liaised in the Pro Shop to discuss the possible line up.

Geraint was given the honour of leading the troops to battle and although playing well, came up just shy of securing a point. Mike then went seconded and was paired up with their playing professional. After a great tussle, Mike came up short and shook hands on the 17th green.

At 3-3 the game was nicely poised. But Came’s big guns were next to bat. Sean was in front from the very first hole and won his match 2up with another fine display. Matt dismantled his opponent and gave him a golfing lesson in the wind with a fabulous 7&5 win. Captain Mark then added his second point of the day with a fantastic afternoon of classic match play golf. -1 through 16 holes secured Mark a 3&2 victory and the 6th point that Came required to win and progress to the final.

Ryan once again showed true grit and determination in grinding out yet another 1up victory. He along with Sean and Matt have won 4/4 points in this year’s competition.

Gareth lost his first scratch match of the year against their 2 Handicapper. Alan however, continued his very impressive match play form this season with a fantastic halved match by winning the final two holes. The final score gave Came Down a 7.5-4.5 win.

Many thanks to Charlie McIntyre for starting the boys off and being around the course all day.

Came Down now advance to the Final against Weymouth Golf Club that will be played at Yeovil Golf Club. The date will be advised in due course. Please come down and support the boys and we wish them the very best of luck.
