Celebrating 100 Years of Came Down Ladies’ Section

2026 marks a truly special milestone at Came Down Golf Club – the centenary of our Ladies’ Section. For 100 years, women have played a vital role in shaping the spirit, success and community of the club. This anniversary is not only a celebration of history, but also an opportunity to look forward to an exciting future for women’s golf at Came Down.

A Proud History Since 1926

The Ladies’ Section was formally established on 15th November 1926, following a General Meeting chaired by Miss Irene Huleatt, who became the first Lady Captain. This development came three decades after the founding of Dorchester Golf Club, yet women had already been an integral part of the club for many years.

In fact, by 1924, there were over 300 members at Came Down, including 100 ladies. While early membership conditions reflected the social norms of the time (including restricted playing hours on Sundays), the dedication and passion of female members never wavered. Over the decades, progress continued, with equal voting rights granted in 1972 and equal subscription fees introduced in 1998.

Community, Competition and Camaraderie

From its earliest days, the Ladies’ Section has been about far more than just golf. Social connection has always been at its heart. Early events included bridge afternoons, coffee mornings, fashion shows and garden parties – all helping to build a strong and welcoming community.

Today, that spirit continues through a busy calendar of competitions, mixed events and social gatherings. Highlights include:

  • Eleven mixed competitions throughout the year

  • Friendly matches with other clubs during the summer

  • Charity fundraising events chosen by the Ladies’ Captain

  • Annual celebrations such as the Christmas Fayre and Lunch

  • The much-loved Captains’ Drive-In to start the new season

The introduction of the Came Down Ex-Captains group in 1991 also reflects the enduring friendships formed through the section, bringing together past captains each year for a day of golf and shared memories.

Success on the Course

The Ladies’ Section has a rich competitive history, both locally and nationally. Members have represented Came Down as County Officials, including five Presidents and five County Captains. Since 1935, the section has achieved:

  • 41 honours in major County events

  • 58 individual player trophies

  • 9 runner-up titles

  • Multiple regional and national honours

One standout figure from the club’s history is Miss Tessa Ross Stein, who rose to national prominence in the late 1950s, representing her club, county and country, and captaining England Girls.

Marking Milestones and Memories

The Ladies’ Section has always embraced celebration. From the club’s centenary in 1996, complete with commemorative medals, special events and even a visit from Ryder Cup Captain Bernard Gallacher, to national celebrations such as Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilees, members have consistently come together to mark important occasions.

Anniversaries of the Ladies’ Section itself – including the 75th, 80th and 90th years – have also been proudly celebrated, leading us now to this remarkable 100-year milestone.

The Benefits of Golf for Women

As we celebrate the past, it’s also important to highlight why golf continues to be such a rewarding sport for women today.

Golf offers a unique combination of physical, mental and social benefits:

  • Health & Wellbeing: walking the course provides excellent low-impact exercise, improving fitness and overall wellbeing.
