Why Choose Came Down for Your Society Day
There are plenty of reasons why societies return to Came Down year after year:
A course for all seasons – our chalk downland terrain ensures excellent natural drainage, keeping the course in superb condition all year round.
Spectacular scenery – enjoy panoramic views across Weymouth Bay, Portland, Dorchester and the Dorset countryside.
Tailored experiences – we welcome societies of 12 or more golfers and can build a package to suit your group’s needs, schedule and budget.
Warm hospitality – from your first enquiry to the final putt, our friendly team will make sure your day runs smoothly and everyone feels at home.
Birthplace of the Ryder Cup
Founded in 1896, Came Down Golf Club combines timeless design with a unique place in golfing history. Designed by five-time Open Champion J.H. Taylor and refined by Harry Colt, our classic downland layout remains as enjoyable today as it was over a century ago. We’re also proud to be linked to the birth of the Ryder Cup; it was here that Samuel Ryder, inspired by friendly matches with club member Ernest Whitcombe, first conceived the idea for the famous competition between Great Britain and the USA.
When you visit Came Down, you’re walking in the footsteps of golfing legends!
Relax and Refuel in the Clubhouse
Our clubhouse is the ideal spot to gather before or after your round. Overlooking stunning views of Dorchester and the surrounding countryside, it offers a fully licensed bar, comfortable lounge seating and freshly prepared food made with local ingredients. Whether it’s coffee and bacon rolls before play or a hearty post-round meal, our catering team will make sure your group is well looked after.
Wildlife & Natural Beauty
Part of the magic of Came Down is its peaceful, rural setting. The open downland course is home to an abundance of wildlife – buzzards, hares, sika deer and red kites are regularly spotted during a round. The grasslands also attract wildflowers and pollinators, creating a natural and tranquil environment for your day on the course.
Course Highlights
Our 18-hole course is renowned for its variety and natural beauty, offering a mix of open fairways, strategic bunkering and challenging greens. Some of our most talked-about holes include:
Hole 1 – “Casterbridge”: a downhill par 4 with wide views over Dorchester. The approach demands care, as the green slopes away and can make putting tricky.
Hole 5 - “Valley”: a demanding par 4 playing uphill through a valley and often into the wind. Although not bunkered, the green has a tricky slope which places a premium on staying below the hole with your approach shot.
Hole 15 - “Who’s-A-Fear’d”: this is a dangerous par 3. Out of bounds lurks over the road to the left and you are on the highest point of the course so the wind is usually a factor. Once you’ve holed out, take a minute to soak in the amazing southerly view out over Weymouth and Portland.
Hole 17 - “Polly’s Pit”: the hole takes its name from the large pit which sits to the right of the green, which is itself named after the last pony to be used to work on the course. This a short ‘risk and reward’ par 4. The green is in range with the tee shot but trouble, and a potentially big number, awaits if you miss left or right.
Hole 18 - “Home”: a strong finishing hole. It’s dead straight but well bunkered and a solid tee shot is needed to reach the green in two. An accurate second shot is required to avoid the greenside bunkers, watch out for the pot bunker to the right!
Each hole offers something different, making Came Down ideal for mixed-ability societies who enjoy friendly competition and variety.
