PGA Pro Tips: How to Master Summer Golf Conditions

Summer at Came Down Golf Club is unbeatable (in our humble opinion)! With the sun shining, the course in top condition and breathtaking panoramic views of Dorset’s rolling hills, we provide an escape where you can slow down, take it all in and enjoy every shot.

Our 18-hole downland course will test your technique and sharpen your skills. Whether you're a low-handicap player or looking to improve your game, Came Down provides the ideal setting. Thanks to its chalk base, the course drains beautifully and remains firm and fast – perfect for dry, sunny conditions.

But with all this glorious weather comes a different kind of challenge. Firmer ground, faster greens and a breeze rolling across the hills mean summer golf requires a little extra strategy and adaptability.

Read on for PGA pro tips on navigating summer conditions – whether you’re here for a competition, a coaching session, a society day or simply enjoying a round with friends or family.

Firmer Fairways = More Roll

One of the biggest changes in summer is how much roll you’ll get after your ball lands. While this can help you gain valuable distance off the tee, it also means you need to rethink your club selection and landing spots.

Pro Tip:
“Play for the bounce. Instead of aiming to carry the ball all the way to your target, allow for a bit of run. A lower ball flight with a controlled swing can give you extra yardage – just make sure to avoid firm areas near hazards where the ball might take an unexpected turn.”

Faster Greens Mean Finer Touch

In the summer, greens tend to dry out and speed up, making distance control on putts more important than ever.

Pro Tip:
“Use your practice time to focus on feel. Spend 5-10 minutes before your round practising long lag putts and delicate downhill sliders. On fast greens, less is more – a smoother, lighter stroke will help you stay in control.”

Make full use of the practice putting green at Came Down before your round to get a feel for pace and build confidence in your short game.

Playing in the Wind

Here on the Dorset hills, it’s rare to play a completely still round and summer breezes can turn into strong gusts at a moment’s notice. Learning to shape your shots and manage trajectory is key.

Pro Tip:
“Take more club and swing smooth. Trying to hit the ball harder into the wind only adds spin, which makes the ball balloon and lose distance. Keep the ball low by placing it slightly back in your stance and maintaining a steady tempo.”

Dress Smart, Stay Sharp

Warm weather golf means keeping cool and staying focused.

  • Wear breathable, moisture-wicking golf clothing

  • Bring sun cream, a cap or visor and a towel

  • Keep hydrated and carry light snacks

  • Respect the dress code while staying comfortable

A few small tweaks to your routine – and your wardrobe – can help you feel and play your best.

Bring the Right Gear

Summer golf conditions can be tough on your kit – and your scorecard – if you’re not prepared. Firmer ground and faster greens mean it’s worth checking your equipment.

Suggested gear for summer play:

  • Low-compression golf balls for extra control on firm fairways

  • Wedges with less bounce to help from tight lies

  • Extra gloves to maintain grip in warm or humid weather

We have buggies available for hire – ideal for those who’d prefer a more relaxed way to get around the course in the heat. Just remember to book in advance – call the pro shop on 01305 812670.

Our pro shop is fully stocked with all your essentials – from the latest summer balls and gloves to clothing, accessories and club advice. Pop in and speak to the team before your next round to find gear suited to you.

Respect the Course and Fellow Golfers

Summer is one of the busiest times of year at Came Down, with members, visitors and societies enjoying the great conditions. Good etiquette makes the game more enjoyable for everyone.

Reminders for the summer season:

  • Keep up with the group in front

  • Repair pitch marks and replace divots

  • Rake bunkers

  • Let faster groups through

  • Be ready to play when it’s your turn

A little courtesy goes a long way, especially on busy summer days.

Bringing the Kids This Summer?

Golf is a fantastic way for children to enjoy the fresh air, get active and learn a new skill during the school holidays. Here are a few tips if you're planning to bring the little ones along:

  • Start small: a few holes or time on the putting green is ideal for younger children.

  • Plan around the heat: morning or late afternoon rounds are cooler and more comfortable.

  • Dress and pack smart: suncream, hats, water and snacks are must-haves.

  • Make it fun: keep things relaxed and let kids enjoy at their own pace.

  • Lessons for Juniors: Our PGA pro coaches in a fun, welcoming environment to help young golfers build skills and confidence.

We’re proud to be a family-friendly club and there's no better place to spend quality time together than out on the course.
